TANAPA and Media to work closely on anti-poaching
Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Honorable Ambassador Khamis Kagasheki has declared an all-out war against poaching. Hon. Kagasheki was officiating at the workshop organized by Tanzania National Parks to News Editors in the country held in Iringa recently.
“We must act now. The situation on the ground is alarming and intolerable,” he said in response to an upsurge in elephant poaching in the country.
The workshop with a theme “The role of media in fighting poaching” drew participants from all mainstream media houses in the country and they all together vows to set an agenda on war against poaching which is threatening the country’s economy.
According to the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute, Tanzania is losing 30 elephants daily to poaching. However, an independent expert, Dr. Alfred Kikoti from the Tanzania Elephant Protection Society, said the figure was much higher. “
The fact is that Tanzania has since 2009 lost 50 per cent of its elephant population. The remaining ones are in danger of being completely wiped out if urgent measures are not taken,” he said.
