2010 FIFA WORLD CUP PROMOTES SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Tanzania has started benefiting from the preparations of the coming World Cup due to take place next month in South Africa. A fleet of 27 vehicles of different makes with more than 50 tourists entered the Serengeti National Park from the neighboring country of Kenya.

These very old vehicles some of them being  made more than 20 years ago were all of Orange in colour ranging from Beetles, Volkswagen, and Unimogs. They were all bearing lots of stickers and advertisement logos of different Netherlands companies and firms which sponsored their entourage which took off in Amsterdam, Netherlands by roads and is expected to end up in Cape Town, South Africa during the opening day of the World Cup.

The tourists most of them being privately driving tourists majority of them were teenagers and they created atmosphere of wonder and inspiration to everyone in the Serengeti National Park. Other tourists wondered on how these could drive such a long distances on rough roads with these old vehicles and it is when Serengeti Wardens interviewed them to get the story behind their arrival in such a big number and old vehicles in Serengeti and why did they make a visit to Serengeti as one of their destination.

One of these visitors in the name of Debora and her friends Jacqueline and Laura explained this interesting story especially when they reported their fellow to have had a breakdown in southern part of Serengeti in which Serengeti tourism staff managed to rescue them despite the difficulties of the tourists explaining their whereabouts.
Debora and Jacqueline explained their safari from when it was organized in the Netherlands’ and all the destinations they passed to Serengeti and the rest of the journey to South Africa. Their route which was through roads from Amsterdam to Cape Town is depicted by the Map in one of the pictures. Other countries visited were Moroco, Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda and Kenya to Tanzania and they will be passing to Malawi, Victoria Falls, Zambia, Okavango Delta, and Johannesburg San pass and finally Cape Town.

The majority of these visitors which were gathered in the famous Serengeti Visitors Centre said that Serengeti is their favorate destination and they enjoyed a lot their time in the park as they had chances to see lots of animals including the Great Migrations of wildebeests and Zebras, the leopards the lions etc.

They also said they are going to support their Netherland National Team and on their way back they are going to take a ship and not on roads again.

These tourists majority being teenagers were sponsored by companies in Netherlands and they come from different parts of the country.

This number of visitors which visited the Serengeti contributed to lots of Revenue to the park for the two nights they stayed at the public campsites  and refueling of vehicles  but also the country in general as they benefited other people not attached directly to the tourism industry from the shops and from the border to Tanzania from Kenya and they certainly going to benefit more the country as they still pass to Ngorongoro,Lake manyara,Arusha ,Dar-es salaam and southern regions of the country before going to Malawi  Zambia and finally to south Africa.

It is very important now as this event is taking place to increase more promotional efforts as still most of the soccer loving tourists are on their way to south Africa but also when the event will be over when some will be going back to their home they can get chance to visit our beautiful country and help to increase revenue from Tourism. We have to capitalizing on this event we have seen in Serengeti and other areas.

INTENSIVE EDUCATION WILL CURB THE WILDFIRE PROBLEMS IN THE NATIONAL PARKS

Tanzania National Parks has been urged to offer more environmental education to the societies living at the slopes of Mount Meru as a deliberate move to avoid wild fire which in the past month has destroyed more than 600 acres of such forests in the area.

Speaking after visiting the affected area recently, the Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office (Environment), Dr. Batilda Burian stressed that it is only through awareness raising among the residents of the surrounding area, this destruction to environment would stop and people would understand the importance of environmental conservation. She also insisted that all accused persons must be taken to court.

Earlier, the Acting Chief Park Warden of Arusha National Park, Ms Gladness Ng’umbi said that almost an area of 600 acres has been affected and the park has used 10 million Tshs in an effort to control fire. She said the fire could have been caused by honey gatherers who use old methods.

CANOEING SAFARIS LAUNCHED IN ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK

Canoeing in Tanzania

Canoeing safari, yet another tourist attraction, has been introduced around one of the world famous lakes located in the Arusha National Park (ANAPA).

Canoeing safari on one of the Momela lakes, known as ‘Small’ Momela, has already taken off and we are satisfied with the initial response from tourists, Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) Director General, Mr. Gerald Bigurube said recently.

This is the second new tourist attraction to be introduced on the park recently. Another one to officially start next January is a walking safari around the world famous Ngurdoto crater.

The idea is to make visitors be able to have chances to observe everything in the natural world and view different animals in their various habitats under one roof.

TANZANIA NATIONAL PARKS in conjunction with tour operators and other tourism stakeholders are at the moment promoting the two new products which will add value to the country’s extensive attractions.

The canoeing Safari at “Small” Momella” lake is being operated by an Arusha-based company, Green Footprints Adventure Limited. Within a period less than 5 years (2004-2008) about 2,774 tourists have ventured for canoeing into the lake.

The canoeing safari enables visitors to have a closer and natural look at hippos and bird life not easily seen on ordinary game safaris.
In 1995, Arusha National Park hosted only 7,000 visitors with the number shooting up to 56,131 during 2006/7.

Lying between the peaks of Kilimanjaro and Meru, Arusha National Park is an outstandingly beautiful area with wide range of habitats, form a string of crater lakes where many water birds can be watched through the highland mountain forest to the imposing summit of Mount Meru.

The forest contain a wealth of birds and other animals like the bushbuck easily glimpsed in between ancient cedar trees or the black and white colobus monkeys climbing along their branches.
The interesting geology of the area is reflected in the impressive view of the ash cone and cliff face leading to the summit of Mount Meru.
Those who ascend the summit of the mountain are rewarded with unparalleled views of the majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro and the Rift Valleys.
